The blog about everything I love
The Oculus Quest has a new feature that allows users to connect a high-quality USB-C cable to the Quest to a PC to play PC VR on the Quest. The feature only requires a USB-C cable, and a PC, the Quest will handle tracking. Oculus has been working on the feature for quite some time, and will be available for Public Beta somewhere in November. According to Oculus using the “low-latency custom rendering and streaming pipeline", a PC will be able to stream games at a great rate. All controller information and tracking is handled on the Quest, transferred to the PC, and the PC then does all the processing, which then is transferred to the Quest for the picture to be displayed. Oculus Link requires extremely high cable specifications, so Oculus will create a USB-C cable that is 5 feet (1.5 meters) and has the hardware needed to transfer the data from the PC to the Quest at a quick rate. The cable itself is going to be $70, but Oculus will release the specs to 3rd parties interested in creating their own cable. The Quest has a 1440 × 1600 per eye Dual OLED display with a 72Hz refresh rate. The field of view is speculated to be around 100 degrees. Most of the processing is handled by the PC when using Link, so hardware is not an issue, you just have to have a capable PC to handle VR. People are speculating that this new feature will surely bring the Rift to an end, seeing as the Quest is portable, but can also connect to your PC. This is just my opinion, but I do think that the Rift won't end, and a hybrid console is on it's way. The Rift is a powerful VR headset, and will either be used as more professional VR (such as Valve Index or Vive Cosmos) or will be a cheaper PC headset. A hybrid that supports both portable and PC play is inevitable, and will probably come standard with a Oculus Link compatible cable Thank you so much for reading, and comment down below on what you think about the Oculus Link, and if you think that the Rift is going to be discontinued or not. ~BlueJ
